The story concerns a respected judge (Harry Shannon) who is trying to clean up a saloon run by the notorious Belle Bonner (Ona Munson).
Belle has discovered some secrets about the judge's past, and she has her brutish accomplices try to frame the judge for some of their own crimes.
Deputy Roy Rogers trusts the judge, but his boss does not, setting up a fast-paced if mostly predictable story.

Subject: Roy Steps Up
With Gene Autry in the Army, Republic moved Roy Rogers up a notch and into slightly better pictures with a cast of heavy hitters usually found with Autry or John Wayne previously. Smiley Burnette (second billed), Virginia Grey, Dick Purcell, Ona Munson, and Harry Shannon. This is a TV print, so most of the songs have been edited out. Not to worry, it moves along quite well. One minor quibble. Too much use of the night lens, and night scenes. Good undiscovered little gem for me. Enjoy.
